White Paper

Short and sweet:

White Paper

An in-depth informational document that explains a topic, problem, research finding, or proposed solution.

A substantial content asset often used to educate professional audiences and support lead generation.

Detailed Definition of White Paper:

A white paper is a long-form, research-driven document that examines a specific problem in depth and presents a reasoned argument or solution, typically written in a more formal, authoritative tone than a blog post. It’s most often used in B2B marketing to demonstrate expertise on a complex topic and, in the process, build a case for why a particular approach or product category matters. Because of the time investment required to read one, white papers usually sit behind a lead capture form and are aimed at prospects already fairly far along in researching a decision.

Examples of White Paper:

A cybersecurity firm like CrowdStrike might publish a detailed white paper on emerging ransomware tactics, gating it behind an email signup to generate leads from IT decision-makers.

Consulting firms such as McKinsey regularly release lengthy reports packed with research and data, positioning themselves as authorities on topics like supply chain resilience.

A fintech startup pitching enterprise clients might use one to explain the technical architecture of its platform, giving skeptical CTOs the depth of detail a typical marketing brochure could never provide.
