Behavioral Targeting

Short and sweet:

Behavioral Targeting

The delivery of content or advertising based on a person’s observed actions, interests, or browsing behavior.

A targeting method intended to make messages more relevant to each audience segment.

Detailed Definition of Behavioral Targeting:

Behavioral targeting relies on signals like pages visited, past purchases, search history, and content engagement to build a picture of a person’s interests, then serves ads based on that inferred profile rather than on who they are demographically or what page they happen to be looking at right now. This tends to produce stronger relevance than context-based targeting alone, since a behavior like repeatedly researching hiking boots is often a better predictor of purchase intent than simply reading an outdoors blog once. It does depend heavily on tracking data, though, which means its reach has been narrowed by browser privacy changes and cookie restrictions, pushing marketers toward first-party data and platform-level behavioral signals instead.

Examples of Behavioral Targeting:

After someone spends a week reading articles about home gyms, behavioral targeting might start showing them ads for adjustable dumbbells across completely unrelated websites.

Streaming platforms use this same kind of observed-interest logic internally too, surfacing thriller recommendations to someone who’s been binge-watching crime documentaries all month.

An online travel agency practicing this approach might notice a visitor repeatedly searching flights to Mexico and start serving hotel deals for Cancún before that person even finishes booking a flight.
