Benchmark

Short and sweet:

Benchmark

A reference point used to compare performance against a previous period, industry average, competitor, or defined standard.

A useful baseline for judging whether results are strong, weak, or improving.

Detailed Definition of Benchmark:

A benchmark gives a number meaning by placing it next to a relevant comparison point, whether that’s an industry average, a competitor’s public numbers, or the account’s own historical performance from a prior period. Without one, a metric like a 2% click-through rate is nearly impossible to judge, since 2% might be excellent for a cold display campaign but disappointing for a warm email list. Good benchmarking also accounts for context like industry, channel, and campaign objective, because comparing a B2B lead-gen campaign’s cost per click against a broad e-commerce average will produce a misleading and often demotivating picture.

Examples of Benchmark:

A retailer might use the industry-standard 2 percent email open rate as a benchmark, judging its own newsletter performance against that widely cited figure rather than comparing it to nothing at all.

A SaaS company tracking customer churn could set last year’s rate as an internal reference point like this, aiming to beat that number every single quarter going forward.

Marketing agencies often provide new clients with competitor data to serve the same purpose, helping a business understand whether its social media engagement is actually behind the pack or right in line with everyone else.
