Customer Experience

Personalization

Short and sweet:

Personalization

The adaptation of marketing content, offers, or experiences based on known audience data, behavior, or preferences.

A way to make communication more relevant to the individual or segment receiving it.

Detailed Definition of Personalization:

Personalization tailors what a customer sees, whether that’s product recommendations, email content, or website messaging, based on data about that specific individual rather than showing the same generic experience to everyone. It ranges from simple tactics, like inserting a person’s first name into an email, to far more sophisticated systems that adjust an entire homepage based on past browsing and purchase behavior. Done well, it makes marketing feel more relevant and less like a mass broadcast, though overly aggressive personalization can also feel invasive if it makes clear just how much data is being tracked.

Examples of Personalization:

Netflix’s homepage is a showcase of personalization, rearranging thumbnails and even artwork for the same movie based on each viewer’s watch history.

Amazon does the same thing throughout its site, recommending products based on past purchases so a shopper who just bought a crib sees baby monitors and diapers rather than random unrelated items.

Spotify’s Discover Weekly playlist builds a unique mix of songs for each listener every Monday, based entirely on their individual streaming habits.
