First-Party Data

Short and sweet:

First-Party Data

Information a company collects directly from its audience through its own websites, applications, transactions, and customer interactions.

Data gathered from direct relationships is central to personalization, measurement, and privacy-conscious marketing.

Detailed Definition of First-Party Data:

First-party data is information a business collects directly from its own customers through its own channels, like purchase history, website behavior, or account details, as opposed to data purchased or licensed from an outside data broker. Because it comes from a business’s own direct relationship with the customer, it tends to be more accurate and easier to use in a compliant way than third-party data pieced together from other sources. As third-party tracking cookies get phased out across browsers, first-party data has become one of the primary assets businesses are investing in to sustain effective personalization and targeting going forward.

Examples of First-Party Data:

Amazon’s recommendation engine runs almost entirely on first-party data, using a shopper’s own purchase and browsing history rather than information bought from an outside broker.

As third-party cookies get phased out, retailers like Sephora have leaned harder into information collected directly through loyalty programs and app logins to keep personalizing the shopping experience.

A newspaper’s email list built from direct subscriber signups is a valuable example of this kind of information, giving the publisher a reliable audience it doesn’t have to rent from a social platform.
