Engagement

Short and sweet:

Engagement

The ways people interact with a brand’s content, including likes, comments, shares, saves, clicks, and replies.

A signal of how strongly content connects with its audience.

Detailed Definition of Engagement:

Engagement covers any action someone takes beyond just passively viewing content, like liking, commenting, sharing, clicking, or saving, and it’s treated as a stronger signal of genuine interest than a view or impression alone. Different actions typically carry different weight, since a thoughtful comment usually signals deeper interest than a quick like requiring almost no effort. Platforms rely on engagement signals heavily when deciding what to show more of to a given user, which means content that generates strong early engagement tends to get amplified further by the algorithm itself.

Examples of Engagement:

A Wendy’s tweet that racks up thousands of replies and retweets is generating serious engagement, the kind of back-and-forth that a quiet, unnoticed post never gets close to.

Instagram Reels tend to drive more of this kind of response than static photos for most brands, since the format encourages comments and shares in a way a plain product shot rarely does.

A blog post that readers actually pause to leave a thoughtful comment on is showing this same connection with an audience that a high pageview count alone can’t reveal.
