Call to Action

Short and sweet:

Call to Action

A prompt designed to encourage someone to take a specific next step, such as clicking a link, booking a consultation, or making a purchase.

A clear direction that turns attention into action.

Detailed Definition of Call to Action:

A call to action is the specific instruction given to a reader or viewer telling them exactly what to do next, whether that’s clicking a button, filling out a form, or picking up the phone, and its wording and placement can meaningfully affect how many people actually follow through. Vague phrasing like simply saying click here tends to underperform more specific language that tells someone exactly what they’ll get, like start your free trial or download the guide. Because it’s often the single moment that determines whether all the preceding content actually converts into a lead or sale, this small piece of copy tends to get disproportionate attention and testing relative to its size.

Examples of Call to Action:

A simple “Add to Cart” button is a call to action that appears on nearly every e-commerce product page, giving a shopper the exact next step the moment they’re ready to buy.

Netflix’s homepage uses a bold “Start Your Free Trial” prompt like this, making it obvious what a new visitor should do without any confusing extra options.

Email newsletters often close with a nudge like “Shop the Sale Now,” a direct push meant to convert casual readers into paying customers before they close the message.
