SEO

XML Sitemap

Short and sweet:

XML Sitemap

A file that lists important website URLs to help search engines discover and understand the site’s structure.

A technical SEO resource that supports efficient crawling and indexing.

Detailed Definition of XML Sitemap:

An XML sitemap is a structured file listing the URLs on a website that a business wants search engines to crawl and index, along with metadata like how recently each page was updated. It doesn’t guarantee a page will rank, but it does make it far easier for a search engine to discover pages, particularly ones with few internal links pointing to them or that were published recently. Large or frequently changing sites lean on sitemaps especially heavily, since crawlers can’t be relied on to find every new or updated page on their own.

Examples of XML Sitemap:

A large e-commerce site like Wayfair relies on an XML sitemap listing tens of thousands of product URLs so Googlebot can find new inventory without having to click through every category page.

Yoast SEO automatically generates one of these files for WordPress sites, updating it every time a new blog post or page gets published so search engines know where to look.

A publisher like The New York Times submits its file directly through Google Search Console, helping fresh articles get indexed and appear in search results within minutes of going live.
