X-Height

Short and sweet:

X-Height

The height of lowercase letters in a typeface, excluding ascenders and descenders.

A typography characteristic that strongly affects readability, visual density, and brand character.

Detailed Definition of X-Height:

X-height is the height of a typeface’s lowercase letters, measured without ascenders or descenders, using the letter x as the reference point, and it plays a big role in how readable or cramped a font feels at small sizes. A typeface with a larger x-height tends to feel more legible on screens and at smaller point sizes, which is part of why many fonts designed specifically for web and mobile use favor a taller x-height than traditional print typefaces. Designers weigh this alongside letter spacing and line height when choosing a typeface meant to be read comfortably across many devices.

Examples of X-Height:

Verdana was designed with an unusually tall x-height specifically so it would stay legible at small sizes on early computer screens, a feature that made it a go-to font for web body text.

Georgia carries a generous proportion here as well, which is part of why designers often choose it for long-form reading even though it’s a serif typeface.

Brands aiming for a bold, modern feel in their logotype, like Uber’s custom wordmark, often favor tall lowercase letters because it makes the text feel sturdier and easier to read at a glance.
