Paid Advertising

Sponsored Content

Short and sweet:

Sponsored Content

Paid editorial, social, or creator content produced or distributed in partnership with a brand.

A promotional format designed to deliver brand messages through content that fits the surrounding platform.

Detailed Definition of Sponsored Content:

Sponsored content is paid material, like an article or video, produced to look and feel like the regular editorial or entertainment content on the platform hosting it, rather than presenting itself with the obvious formatting of a traditional ad. Because it blends in with organic content, most regions require clear disclosure, like a ‘sponsored’ or ‘paid partnership’ label, so audiences aren’t misled about who’s actually behind the message. When done well, it still delivers real value or entertainment to the audience, since content that reads purely as an ad tends to get skipped regardless of the disclosure.

Examples of Sponsored Content:

BuzzFeed regularly publishes sponsored content for brands like HelloFresh, writing listicles that match the site’s usual playful tone while clearly marking the post as a paid partnership.

A beauty influencer posting a “get ready with me” video that name-drops a specific serum halfway through, tagged #ad, is running the same kind of paid promotion as a full-page magazine spread.

The New York Times’ own advertising department produces this kind of material for major brands through its T Brand Studio, mimicking real editorial storytelling while staying clearly labeled as paid.
