Paid Media

Short and sweet:

Paid Media

Marketing exposure purchased by a brand, including search ads, social ads, display placements, sponsorships, and promoted content.

A channel category used to gain targeted reach more quickly than organic distribution alone.

Detailed Definition of Paid Media:

Paid media covers any channel where a business pays directly for placement or distribution, spanning search ads, social ads, display banners, and sponsored content, as distinct from owned media, which a business controls outright, and earned media, which it doesn’t pay for at all. Because paid media can be turned on and scaled quickly, it’s often used to generate fast, predictable results while slower-building channels like SEO or organic social mature in the background. Its main tradeoff is that visibility typically stops the moment spending stops, unlike content or relationships built through owned and earned efforts.

Examples of Paid Media:

A new streaming service launching nationally might pour millions into paid media, running television spots, YouTube pre-rolls, and billboard ads all at once to build awareness quickly.

Sephora blends this kind of purchased exposure with organic social posts, using the paid side to guarantee reach for a big product launch rather than relying on the algorithm alone.

Political campaigns depend heavily on bought advertising space in the final weeks before an election, buying television and digital ad slots to reach undecided voters directly.
