Paid Advertising

SEM

Short and sweet:

SEM

Search engine marketing; the use of paid search advertising to increase visibility on search engine results pages.

A direct-response channel for reaching people who are actively searching for relevant products or services.

Detailed Definition of SEM:

SEM most commonly refers in day-to-day use to the paid side of search marketing specifically, the bidding, ad copywriting, and budget optimization involved in running search ads, even though the letters technically stand for the broader term search engine marketing. This narrower, practical usage exists because most marketers already have a separate word, SEO, for the organic side, leaving SEM to informally fill the paid gap in everyday conversation. Whichever definition a team uses, being explicit about it internally avoids confusion when someone asks for an SEM report and receives only paid data or only combined data unexpectedly.

Examples of SEM:

A DTC brand launching a new product often turns to SEM first, since a well-targeted Google Ads campaign can generate sales within hours instead of waiting months for organic rankings to build.

Legal and insurance industries are notorious for expensive bidding in this space, with firms paying well over $50 a click on terms like “personal injury attorney” because a single client is worth so much.

Marketing agencies frequently run these campaigns for local clients like dentists or HVAC companies, pairing tightly targeted keywords with a small daily budget to capture nearby, ready-to-buy customers.
