Metric

Short and sweet:

Metric

A quantifiable measurement used to track activity, behavior, or performance.

A metric becomes a KPI when it is selected as a key indicator of an important objective.

Detailed Definition of Metric:

A metric is any individual number tracked to measure performance, like clicks, revenue, or bounce rate, serving as one of the raw building blocks that gets combined and interpreted to form a broader KPI or business insight. Not every metric available is worth watching closely, since teams that try to monitor everything at once often end up unable to tell which numbers actually matter for their specific goals. Choosing which metrics to prioritize typically starts from the business objective backward, rather than starting with whatever data happens to be easiest to pull from a dashboard.

Examples of Metric:

Website traffic is a basic metric that a business like a small blog tracks daily, even if it never becomes an official KPI reported to leadership.

Email marketers watch dozens of these numbers at once, from open rate to unsubscribe rate, deciding later which ones actually matter enough to guide strategy.

A retailer might track average order value this way, using it alongside conversion rate and traffic to get a fuller picture of how the online store is performing.
