Copywriting

Short and sweet:

Copywriting

The practice of writing persuasive marketing text intended to inform, influence, or encourage action.

Effective copy connects audience needs with a clear message and next step.

Detailed Definition of Copywriting:

Copywriting is the craft of writing persuasive text specifically intended to prompt a reader toward an action, whether that’s clicking, buying, or signing up, which sets it apart from other forms of writing that mainly aim to inform or entertain without a defined next step in mind. Strong copywriting balances clarity with persuasion, since text that’s clever but confusing typically converts worse than something plain and direct that a reader immediately understands. It also has to flex significantly by context, since the voice and length appropriate for a punchy social ad differ enormously from what works in a detailed product page or a long-form sales email.

Examples of Copywriting:

David Ogilvy’s famous Rolls-Royce ad, which opened with “At 60 miles an hour, the loudest noise in this new Rolls-Royce comes from the electric clock,” is considered a masterclass in copywriting.

A single word swap in a landing page’s headline, from “buy now” to “get started,” is the kind of small wording tweak that can noticeably shift how many visitors convert.

Apple’s product pages rely on tight, confident writing like this, often reducing a complex feature to a single punchy line like “so powerful, so small” instead of a lengthy technical description.
