Customer Journey

Awareness Stage

Short and sweet:

Awareness Stage

The point in the buyer’s journey when a person first recognizes a need, problem, or opportunity.

Marketing at this stage typically focuses on education rather than an immediate sale.

Detailed Definition of Awareness Stage:

The awareness stage marks the very beginning of the buyer’s journey, when someone has just recognized they have a problem or need but hasn’t yet started actively comparing specific products or vendors to solve it. Content here tends to work best when it stays educational and broad, focusing on the problem itself rather than pitching a specific solution too early, since a pushy sales pitch at this stage often feels premature and can turn a prospect away. Because someone at this stage is still forming their understanding of the problem, this content also has the best chance of shaping which brand they think of first once they do move into actively considering solutions.

Examples of Awareness Stage:

A homeowner noticing a strange noise from their car’s engine is at the awareness stage the moment they search “why does my car make a clicking noise,” long before they’re thinking about specific repair shops.

A blog post titled “5 Signs You Need a New Roof” targets readers still at this same point, offering general education rather than pitching a specific roofing company.

Brands often run broad social media and video ads aimed at this early phase, simply trying to plant a name in someone’s mind well before that person is anywhere near ready to buy.
