Attribution

Short and sweet:

Attribution

The process of assigning credit to the marketing interactions that contributed to a conversion or sale.

A method for understanding which channels and touchpoints influence business results.

Detailed Definition of Attribution:

Attribution is the broader practice of connecting a conversion back to the marketing efforts that influenced it, addressing the fundamental question of which channels and touchpoints actually deserve credit when a customer finally converts. It exists because customers rarely convert after a single interaction, often engaging with several ads, emails, or organic pages before eventually buying, which makes crediting any one moment alone somewhat arbitrary without a defined system. The specific method chosen to answer this question is what’s known as an attribution model, but attribution itself refers to the underlying challenge every business with multiple marketing channels eventually has to address.

Examples of Attribution:

When a marketing team credits a Facebook ad for a sale that actually started with a friend’s word-of-mouth recommendation, that’s a common failure of attribution rather than a true picture of what worked.

E-commerce brands invest in tools like Triple Whale specifically to solve this exact problem across platforms, since Facebook, Google, and TikTok each want to claim credit for the exact same sale.

A nonprofit trying to prove the value of its billboard campaign faces one of the hardest versions of this challenge in marketing, since there’s no click or code to trace a donation back to a physical sign.
