Social Media

Hashtag

Short and sweet:

Hashtag

A word or phrase preceded by a number sign that categorizes social content and helps people discover related posts.

A platform-dependent tool for organizing conversations and increasing content discoverability.

Detailed Definition of Hashtag:

A hashtag labels a post with a searchable keyword or phrase, letting a platform group together every post using that same tag and helping people who aren’t yet following an account discover content around a topic or event they’re interested in. Beyond simple discovery, hashtags are also used to track participation in a specific campaign or to tap into a larger, ongoing public conversation happening around a trend. Using too many at once, or ones unrelated to the actual content, tends to look spammy and can even suppress reach on some platforms rather than expanding it.

Examples of Hashtag:

Oreo’s #DunkInTheDark tweet during the Super Bowl blackout became one of the most cited hashtag moments in advertising history, spreading purely through retweets rather than paid promotion.

Wendy’s #NationalRoastDay campaign turned a simple tag like this into a viral event, inviting followers to submit themselves for the brand’s signature savage comebacks.

Instagram fitness communities often rally around a shared tag like #transformationtuesday, letting users discover thousands of related before-and-after posts with a single tap.
