User Experience

Short and sweet:

User Experience

The overall quality of a person’s interaction with a website, application, product, or service.

A broad measure of how useful, usable, accessible, and satisfying an experience feels.

Detailed Definition of User Experience:

User experience covers every reaction someone has while using a product, spanning how easy it is to navigate, how quickly it loads, and even how it makes them feel emotionally in the moment, well beyond the visual layer that a user interface addresses. It’s typically shaped by research into real user behavior, using methods like usability testing to surface friction points a design team might otherwise miss simply by using the product themselves. Because these emotional and functional reactions often decide whether someone becomes a repeat customer, user experience is treated as a business priority, not just a design department concern.

Examples of User Experience:

Airbnb redesigned its search filters after noticing that a clunky user experience was causing travelers to abandon the app mid-search, a fix that meaningfully boosted completed bookings.

Duolingo’s gamified streaks and cheerful animations create something that feels more like play than homework, part of why the app keeps millions of learners coming back daily.

A government website with a confusing form and outdated design creates real frustration that can push people to give up on renewing a license entirely, unlike the streamlined process at a company like TurboTax.
