Lead Generation

Qualified Lead

Short and sweet:

Qualified Lead

A potential customer who meets defined criteria indicating a stronger likelihood of becoming a buyer.

A lead that has demonstrated enough fit or intent to deserve greater attention.

Detailed Definition of Qualified Lead:

A qualified lead is a prospect who has been evaluated against a set of defined criteria, such as budget, need, or company size, and found to genuinely fit the profile of someone likely to become a customer, rather than just someone who filled out a form. The term is deliberately broad, since a business decides what qualification actually means for its own pipeline, which is why marketing and sales teams usually agree in advance on the exact bar a lead has to clear. Treating every raw lead as equally qualified, without this filter, tends to waste sales time on people unlikely to buy anytime soon.

Examples of Qualified Lead:

A software company might consider someone a qualified lead only after they’ve matched both the right company size and the right job title, filtering out students or hobbyists who filled out a demo form out of curiosity.

A real estate agent treats this kind of prospect differently than a casual browser, prioritizing calls to someone who’s already been pre-approved for a mortgage over someone just scrolling Zillow listings.

Marketing automation tools like Marketo can automatically flag someone this way once a prospect hits certain criteria, such as visiting the pricing page multiple times within a week.
