Content Strategy

Short and sweet:

Content Strategy

The plan for creating, organizing, distributing, maintaining, and measuring content to achieve business and audience goals.

It connects individual pieces of content to a larger purpose and system.

Detailed Definition of Content Strategy:

Content strategy sits above content marketing execution, defining what topics to cover, who the content is for, and how it ties back to broader business goals before any individual article or video actually gets created. Without this layer of planning, a content program can drift into publishing whatever feels timely in the moment, producing a scattered mix of pieces that don’t build toward any consistent theme or expertise. A clear strategy also makes it easier to say no to off-brand or off-topic content ideas, since every piece can be measured against whether it actually serves the stated goals.

Examples of Content Strategy:

A meal-kit company’s content strategy might dedicate one blog category to quick weeknight recipes and another to nutrition advice, each targeting a slightly different reason people are searching.

Duolingo’s overall plan across TikTok, blog posts, and in-app notifications all reinforces the same playful brand voice, even though the formats and platforms are completely different.

A B2B software company overhauling its approach to publishing might decide to consolidate a dozen scattered blog topics into three core pillars, giving the plan a much clearer sense of direction.
