Campaign Brief

Short and sweet:

Campaign Brief

A planning document that outlines a campaign’s objective, audience, message, deliverables, channels, timing, and success measures.

A shared source of direction for everyone involved in producing and launching the work.

Detailed Definition of Campaign Brief:

A campaign brief outlines the goal, target audience, budget, timeline, and key message for a specific marketing campaign before any creative or media planning work begins, functioning similarly to a creative brief but scoped to an entire campaign rather than a single asset. It gives everyone involved, from designers to media buyers, a shared reference point for what success looks like and what constraints they’re working within. Campaigns kicked off without a clear brief often suffer from mid-project scope creep, since there was never an agreed-upon definition of what the campaign was actually meant to accomplish in the first place.

Examples of Campaign Brief:

A beverage company launching a new flavor might create a campaign brief spelling out the target demographic, the three-week TV and social media schedule, and the specific sales lift it hopes to achieve.

An agency pitching a nonprofit client would build a similar document outlining the fundraising goal, key messaging around urgency, and which channels like direct mail and email will carry the appeal.

Before greenlighting a holiday promotion, a retailer’s marketing director might review this planning document to confirm the budget, creative direction, and launch date all align before work begins.
