Branding

Brand Equity

Short and sweet:

Brand Equity

The added value a recognized brand name gives to a product, service, or company.

Strong brand equity can support preference, loyalty, pricing power, and resilience.

Detailed Definition of Brand Equity:

Brand equity is the added commercial value a name itself contributes beyond a product’s basic functional features, reflected in a willingness to pay more, choose it over a nearly identical alternative, or trust it enough to try a new product line simply because of the name attached. Unlike brand authority or reputation, which describe perception, brand equity is often treated as an actual financial asset, one that shows up in acquisition valuations and can be measured through price premiums customers are willing to pay. Building it takes sustained investment over years, but it can also erode surprisingly quickly following a major scandal or a string of disappointing products.

Examples of Brand Equity:

Apple can charge hundreds of dollars more for a laptop with similar internal specs to a competitor’s, a price premium made possible almost entirely by decades of built-up brand equity.

When Coca-Cola surveys consumers, plenty admit that Pepsi tastes just as good in blind taste tests, yet Coke still outsells it, a clear demonstration of this added value shaping preference beyond the product itself.

A generic store-brand cereal might taste nearly identical to a name brand, but the name brand’s reputation alone convinces many shoppers it must somehow be worth the extra dollar.
