Referral Marketing

Short and sweet:

Referral Marketing

A strategy that encourages customers, partners, or advocates to recommend a business to others.

A growth approach built on trust transferred through personal recommendations.

Detailed Definition of Referral Marketing:

Referral marketing deliberately encourages existing customers to recommend a business to people they know, often backed by a formal program that offers an incentive, like a discount or credit, to both the referrer and the new customer. Unlike organic word of mouth, which happens on its own, this approach actively structures and rewards the behavior, giving a business more influence over how much recommending actually happens. Because a referred customer already comes with some built-in trust from the person who sent them, referral programs frequently produce customers who convert faster and stick around longer than those acquired through cold advertising.

Examples of Referral Marketing:

Dropbox famously grew its user base through referral marketing, giving both the referrer and the new signup extra free storage space, a tactic credited with driving explosive early growth.

Airbnb ran a similar program early on, offering travel credits to hosts and guests who successfully invited friends onto the platform.

Many subscription boxes, like HelloFresh, lean on this same approach by giving existing customers a discount code to share, turning happy subscribers into an unpaid sales force.
