Marketing Strategy

Short and sweet:

Marketing Strategy

A long-term plan for reaching a target audience, creating value, differentiating the brand, and achieving business objectives.

The guiding logic that connects customer insight, positioning, channels, and measurement.

Detailed Definition of Marketing Strategy:

Marketing strategy is the overarching set of decisions about who to target, how to position a brand against competitors, and which channels to prioritize, sitting a level above a marketing plan, which spells out the specific campaigns and tactics used to execute that strategy. Getting strategy right matters more than perfecting any single tactic, since even flawlessly executed ads or content will underperform if they’re built on the wrong audience or a weak competitive position. Because market conditions and competitors keep shifting, strategy is generally revisited on a longer cycle than individual campaigns, but it’s never treated as permanently fixed either.

Examples of Marketing Strategy:

Dollar Shave Club’s marketing strategy centered on undercutting razor giants like Gillette on price while using humor to make the brand memorable from day one.

Patagonia’s overall approach leans heavily on environmental activism, positioning the company as a mission-driven business rather than just an outdoor apparel retailer.

A regional hospital system might build its long-term plan around community trust, sponsoring local events and running patient-story ads rather than competing purely on price or convenience.
