Last-Touch Attribution

Short and sweet:

Last-Touch Attribution

An attribution model that gives all conversion credit to the final recorded marketing interaction before the conversion.

A simple model that emphasizes the touchpoint closest to the decision.

Detailed Definition of Last-Touch Attribution:

Last-touch attribution gives 100 percent of the credit for a conversion to the final interaction a customer had before converting, ignoring every earlier touchpoint that may have introduced them to the brand or built consideration along the way. Its main appeal is simplicity, since it’s easy to calculate and understand compared to more complex multi-touch models that try to weigh several interactions at once. The tradeoff is that it can seriously undervalue channels like content or social media that tend to influence someone early in their journey rather than right at the moment of purchase.

Examples of Last-Touch Attribution:

Under last-touch attribution, if a shopper first discovered a brand through an Instagram ad but ultimately clicked a Google search ad right before buying, the Google ad gets 100 percent of the credit.

Many e-commerce platforms default to this model in their reporting, which can make paid search look far more effective than upper-funnel channels like display ads that actually sparked the original interest.

A marketing team relying solely on this approach might mistakenly cut a brand-awareness campaign’s budget, not realizing it was quietly driving the very searches getting credited to a different channel.
