Paid Advertising

Display Advertising

Short and sweet:

Display Advertising

Paid visual advertising placed across websites, applications, and digital platforms, often using banners, images, video, or interactive formats.

A channel commonly used for awareness, retargeting, and broad audience reach.

Detailed Definition of Display Advertising:

Display advertising places visual ads, typically banners or image-based creative, on websites and apps across an ad network, generally aiming to build broad awareness rather than capture the immediate intent that search ads target. Because these placements appear on content unrelated to what someone is actively searching for, display ads rely more heavily on visual design and precise audience targeting to earn attention rather than matching a specific typed query. Even though click-through rates on display ads tend to run lower than search, the format still plays a meaningful role in building familiarity that can influence a purchase decision made through a different channel entirely.

Examples of Display Advertising:

The colorful banner ads that follow a shopper around news websites after they’ve browsed a pair of sneakers are a classic form of display advertising.

Google’s Display Network places these visual ads across millions of partner sites and apps, letting a brand like Sephora reach shoppers well beyond its own website.

Video pre-roll ads that play before a YouTube clip fall into this same category too, blending motion and sound into the same visual-first advertising family as static banners.
